Sport and Leisure, Umbria & Tuscany

Walking

The hills of the Tuscany Umbria border offer you some fantastic walking opportunities. Until recently it has been hard to find information on walking routes. This problem has been solved with the publication of a waking book written by myself, Martin Daykin. The book, Circular Walks on the Tuscany Umbria Border is now available for you as an ebook for the Kindle or other reading devices with a Kindle app.

My book also includes city walks around Perugia and Cortona and two different walks that start with a stroll through Gubbio. Using my book, you can explore these beautiful places on your very own self-guided tour.

Riding

There are no riding schools in the Niccone Valley other than Castello di Reschio, which, as far as I know, is closed to the general public. I have however, heard good reports about the Centro di Equitazion Marena which organises treks around Monte Tezio, some of the advertised routes visit places on the walking routes in my book (see above). In the hill town of Montone you’ll find Equestrian Ethical Centre (no website) and near Pierantonio the mysteriously named ASD 25-09 Peformance Horses .

Golf

There are four golf courses that you can easily reach from our villas on the Tuscany Umbria border:

  • Antognolla – 18 holes, close to Umbertide.
  • Perugia – 18 holes, on the outskirts of Perugia.
  • Caldese – 9 holes, close to Città di Castello.
  • Lamborghini – 9 holes, near Panicarola, just to the south of Lake Trasimeno.

Tennis

You’ll find tennis courts open to the public in Umbertide, Niccone (free), Lisciano Niccone, Mercatale and Cortona.

Cycling

You can hire bikes and motor scooters in the town of Tuoro. If you are a serious cyclist, the professional cycling shop, Cicli Valentini, just outside Castiglione del Lago, is probably a better bet. A number of campsites and shops around Lake Trasimeno, (including the Lido (beach) at Tuoro and Cicli Valentini), participate in a bike hire scheme where bikes can be picked up and dropped off at any other point. This makes it possible (with a bit of planning) to cycle half way around the Lake and catch a ferry back.

Scooter Hire

You can also hire scooters from Umbria in Vespa near the eastern shore of Lake Trasimeno, I’ve not tried this but their bright yellow vespas are a common sight in the summer.

Windsurfing and Kitesurfing

Available on Lake Trasimeno at the beach below Tuoro.

Whitewater Rafting

Rafting in Umbria is available near Norcia in Southern Umbria on a tributary of the Nera River (suitable for families) and at the Cascata di Marmore near Terni (over 18 only).
