Spoleto (Umbria)
A beautiful town in South-east Umbria and similar to Assisi in appearance, Spoleto is around an hour from most of our properties. After the end of the Roman Empire, Spoleto was the capital of a Lombard kingdom, the Duchy of Spoleto. Today it’s well known for the Festival dei Due Mondi, a music and arts festival held each summer.
Things to see:
Duomo
The exterior has a beautiful facade but the main attraction is on the inside: Filippo Lippi’s frescoes of the Life of the Virgin.
Piazza del Mercato
Entered through a Roman arch, the Arco di Druso, this is a lively piazza with a market every morning. The arch used to be taller, but the level of the street has risen by a metre and a half since Roman times. There are several shops and bars making it the focal point of the town.
Museo Diocesano
The masterpiece in this gallery is a Madona and Child by Fillipino Lippi, the son of Filippo.
The Rocca
Used as a prison until 1982, this impressive castle can be visited as part of a guided tour.
Ponte delle Torri
Originally a medieval aqueduct, this pedestrian bridge has ten arches and a span of 240 metres, at its highest, it is 76m! |
