Teverina
is about 1.5 miles away and has one small shop and a petrol station.
There is a restaurant at the top of the lane to Cerretella, and with
prior arrangement the owner would also be happy to provide a simple
meal to eat at home. Portole is about 6 miles away in the direction
of Cortona and has a well stocked shop and a restaurant. There are two
further restaurants on the way to Cortona.
Cortona is a fascinating town of very ancient origins. Perched on a
steep hill it has vast and spectacular views over the fertile Val di
Chiana towards the hills of Sienna and to the south there are views
towards Lago di Trasimeno, the inland sea of Italy. The Etruscans made
Cortona an important League city together with Arezzo and Perugia, and
the huge stone blocks at the base of the city wall were laid by the
Etruscans. The Romans colonised it in 450 AD and some time after that
the Goths occupied it. It became a commune in 1200. Most of the aspects
of today have a medieval and Renaissance flavour, and it is one of central
Italy’s most interesting towns. In its galleries and museums are
paintings by Fra Angelico, Signorelli, Lorenzetti, Duccio, to name but
a few.
Its streets and squares are a delight, the Piazza della Republica must
be one of the finest in Italy and attracts people of all ages and types
to congregate and socialise. Cortona not only organises many concerts
and art exhibitions, it is a centre for antiques and also holds a great
number of gastronomic feasts and other activities.
Getting there: nearest airports Florence, 1.5 hours away; Pisa,
about 2 hours away, and Forli (south of Bologna) about 1.5 hours.
"We had a fantastic holiday at Casa Cerretella. It is a beautifully restored farmhouse in an idyllic setting." WS August 2006
Casa Cerretella is a luxury Tuscany Villa rental home with pool in the wooded and lush
mountains east of the famous Tuscany hill town of Cortona.. It is an ideal location for a self
catering vacation on the Tuscany/Umbria border. The British owners have created a top
notch villa from a former traditional Tuscany farmhouse; set in a hidden valley, high in the
hills it has a beautiful location with views across the Appenines. Its very secluded but not
isolated as there are other converted farmhouses nearby as well as some real working
farms. The garden has been well planted to create a pool setting worthy of a top quality
rental villa in Tuscany. It is near the small village of Teverina, one of the last outposts of
Tuscany before the border with Umbria. Most people renting the house take the twenty
minutes drive to Cortona, the famous hill town of eastern Tuscany; a town of spires and
towers with not much changed architecturally since the fifteenth century though much of
it is considerably older. Today it offers many restaurants, pizzeria, trattoria, cafes and
entertainments. From Cortona, the whole of Tuscany is available to explore by car or by
train. One direction leads to the heartland of Tuscany and the other to the many ancient
towns of Umbria. Within an hour of this self catering rented villa is Perugia, the capital of
Umbria. Siena, Asssi, Spello, Montepulciano and many other famous hill towns and even
Florence and Rome can be day trips, by car, or better by train from the station at Terontola
Cortona where there is free parking. Casa Cerretella is a self catering Tuscany villa with
pool that is part of the collection of self catering villas and self catering apartments on the
Tuscany/Umbria border rented by Gorgacce Rentals since 1994. There are a full range of
luxury Tuscany villas for rent, converted farmhouses, rental apartments in Cortona and, in
Spello, self catering apartments and a town house. Our base is the beautiful Niccone
valley, divided between the two regions of Italy; with additional Tuscany villas near
Arezzo and luxury Umbria villas on the west side of Lake Trasimeno. Less expensive self
catering vacation villas divided into apartments are available with pools.
