IL NASCONDIGLIO is a little gem. Its just two rooms and a bathroom with light coming from an inner courtyard, private to the house.
The courtyard has a table and chairs. Its an elegant and surprisingly spacious little house. The day room has all you would expect in beautiful style.
Off the day room is a vestibule with a washbasin leading to a bathroom with shower, WC, washbasin and washing machine.
The bedroom, behind an antique door, has ample wardrobe and drawer space.
A double door opens on to the inner courtyard with a wrought iron table and chairs with cushions.
The house is on one of the steep streets that are a feature of Cortona and is just a short walk to the town centre.
There are parking spaces close to the house.
Cortona is the most eastern of the Tuscany hill towns, dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, but there are also Etruscan remains. The old street through the centre is delightful, outside cafes, restaurants, boutiques, food shops and internet cafe, a museum and an art gallery with paintings by Fra' Angelico and Signorelli.
There are many day trips possible from Cortona to the surrounding historic and cultural centers of Umbria and Tuscany. Within an hour you can visit Perugia, Deruta, Assisi, Arezzo, Sansepolcro, Siena, Gubbio, Orvieto, Montepulciano and other hill towns. Florence is just over an hour by car or the fastest train.
Please read booking terms and conditions £450 per week. The owner will ask for a deposit if you wish to use heating or air conditioning. There are no other charges.
Il Nascondiglio is a delightful one bedroom, self catering apartment near the centre of
Cortona, the most famous of the walled hill towns in the east of Tuscany. It looks over to
the hills around Pienza and Siena and the nearer Montepulciano, famous for its vino noble
and where there are many opportunities to try this important Tuscan wine. It is new to
Gorgacce Rentals though we have rented another house belonging to the owner for fifteen
years. It is quite unique in its style. Probably its finest point is the magnificent small,
private courtyard There is a comfortable sitting room with a kitchen area and a dining
table, though most of the year guests will eat in the courtyard. It is on the ground floor of
an old palazzo. From the road, one enters a communal foyer where the door to the
apartment is situated. Parking is in a piazza further up the road.
Cortona is a real jewel of a hill town; no-one is disappointed. Its architecture going back
more than a thousand years is undisturbed. Fra Angelica's "Annunciation" is just one of the
important art works kept in Cortona which is a centre for painting. The Etruscan museum
holds important artifacts of this ancient civilisation which had a big presence in this part of
Tuscany. Its most famous piece is an elaborate, stone carved candelabra. Many
archeological excavations of Etruscan origin can be seen below the town.
As well as being a cultural centre, Cortona is good for shopping and there are many
restaurants and bars from simple pavement cafes to top notch restaurants. It is close to
Lake Trasimeno with ferries to the islands and other towns. The Perugia to Siena road is
not far away giving great access to both Tuscany and Umbria. Perugia is less than half an
hour and Siena is about fifty minutes. Montepulciano, Cortona, Assisi and many other
places in Tuscany and Umbria are quite close. There is a station with parking in the valley
below with trains to Florence, Rome, Arezzo, Orvieto, Perugia and many other places.
Italian trains are regular and punctual with low fares.
Although it would be easy to spend a whole week just wandering around the town and its
immediate vicinity (see the Cortona walk) Cortona is well placed for touring the regions of Tuscany and Umbria
