Pissignano Antiques Market

We really enjoy going to local antiques markets, often heading to nearby Città di Castello on the third Sunday of the month. The biggest antique market in Umbria and probably one of the biggest in Italy is held in the village of Pissignano. The market is held on the first Sunday of each month and is so well known that many antique dealers from Rome attend. Pissignano is located near the town of Trevi and is next to the famous Fonti del Clitunno, the natural springs that inspired the poem describing Umbria as the “Green Heart of Italy”.

The market stretches alongside the main road into Pissignano and into the centre of the village itself. It takes a while to stroll along the entire length of the market, we were advised by experienced visitors to park at the Pissignano end and make our way back along the market. There are a lot of interesting items to look at and buy, our daughters found some wonderful vintage dresses.

Afterwards we had a good lunch at La Trattoria, sitting outside on the shady terrace. On the day of the market advance booking is advisable to secure a table.

Umbertide Market

Umbertide is a small town on the river Tiber close to the Niccone Valley, the location of many of our holiday villas on the Tuscany Umbria border.

It has a market on Wednesdays where you can find seasonal fruit and vegetables at incredibly good prices. Parking can be a problem but if you cross the railway line and go to the large car park at the back of Piazza San Francesco you will almost certainly find a space. Piazza San Francesco is a picturesque part of the old town with a couple of churches and a cloister.

From here it’s a short walk into the main part of the centro storico where you will find the stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables, porchetta (whole roast pig), salamis and cheeses.

Just past the Rocca, the huge castle tower, you will find the clothing and hardware stalls where you can, if you are a determined rummager, find some good clothes in the bargain bins. We always try and buy as much of our weekly vegetables from the market as possible, even going so far as to take a shopping trolley.

Designer Shopping At The Mall, Tuscany

The Mall is a large designer shopping outlet centre near the Incisa exit of the A1 motorway south of Florence in Tuscany. It’s a relatively easy drive from most of our villas on the Tuscany Umbria border, but be warned, if you are a serious shopping junkie, you may end up spending the whole day there. I heard about a group from Singapore who hired a bus and planned to visit Florence afterwards, needless to say, they didn’t make it past The Mall!

If you normally buy clothes from high street chain stores, you may baulk at the the prices, in the Prada store I wasn’t tempted to spend over €600 on coats reduced from over €1000! However, bargain hunters are best off going for the sales from the second week in July until the end of the first week in September or in January when the discounted prices are slashed further.

With our limited budget we found some real bargains in the Diesel shop and bought some reasonably priced kids clothes from Stella McCartney as presents for our god children. Satisfied with our haul of goodies, we headed back to the Tuscany Umbria border.
